    Four Queens
    VEGAS.com logo

    Four Queens

Opened in 1966, the Four Queens Hotel & Casino charges what seems like a pauper's price for a decent room and an old Vegas atmosphere right in the heart of downtown's Fremont Street Experience. The vibe: Vintage Vegas all the way, bargain-basement rooms, draws a mature crowd What we love: There's no resort fee. Actually, we better repeat that because it's so unusual in Vegas. The Four Queens does not charge a resort fee. And we think that's awesome. For cheap digs centrally located in downtown, the Four Queens is hard to beat. Walk out the front doors and you're on Fremont Street Experience underneath the multimillion-light Viva Vision canopy where SlotZilla riders fly by. With almost five decades under its belt, the hotel is still visually dazzling. The colorful neon signage and flashing light bulbs create an eye-catching exterior while the marble floor and mirrored ceiling in the lobby foster a feeling of elegance. Want to turn up the romance? Go to Hugo's Cellar. This brick-lined, candlelit gourmet restaurant is a Las Vegas mainstay. Not only will your special someone be wowed by the tableside salad and dessert preparation, but we can't think of another restaurant in Vegas where every lady leaves with a long-stemmed rose. Insider tips: Order a drink and sit out at the Patio Bar, which wraps around the corner of the resort next to the aforementioned Third Street Stage. Whenever bands are playing, you'll not only have a seat (as opposed to standing in the crowd), but also a great view. Want to explore beyond downtown? There's nearby access to the SDX bus system, which will take you to the Stratosphere, Fashion Show mall, Bellagio and hotels at the south end of the Strip. Look for a stop near the corner of Fremont Street Experience and Casino Center Boulevard. Three words: Prime rib special. We know, you see this advertised in coffee shops all over Las Vegas. But the $9.99 prime rib special (with a players club card, which is free and easy to get) at Magnolia's Veranda is a good deal. Just don't go in expecting steakhouse-caliber food and service -- but for price, it's an affordable dinner with a tasty cut of meat, a soup or salad, vegetables and potatoes. Good to know: FYI guys and dolls, on June 19th the south tower will be undergoing renovations. This last phase is supposed to last through 9/15/17, but don't hold your breath because you know how fickle construction can be.    When you pay a low price for a room, you can't be expecting a luxury suite. The standard rooms feel a bit worn but are clean and serviceable. What they lack in contemporary décor, they make up for with triple-sheeting, 32-inch flat-screen TVs and coffeemakers (yes, that's right, coffeemakers). There's no pool at the Four Queens. But, if weather permits, you can use the pool over at Binion's (open seasonally), which sits kitty-corner across Fremont Street Experience. It might be a little awkward walking back and forth with your swim gear in tow, but it totes will be worth it.  Expect to hear loud music in your room from Fremont Street Experience because the Four Queens is situated next to the Third Street Stage. Things generally quiet down around midnight on weekdays, but may run until 2 a.m. on weekends. If noise bothers you, request a room in the South Tower, which is set a little farther back from Fremont Street Experience than the North Tower. Reopening date: June 4, 2020

Vdara Hotel & Spa at ARIA Las Vegas

Vdara Hotel & Spa at Aria Las Vegas is an all-suite, non-smoking and non-gaming hotel that features a wonderful pool deck and luxury rooms. The vibe: Chic boutique, secluded and artsy with modern touches. What we love: Vdara Hotel & Spa at ARIA Las Vegas seriously feels like a peaceful retreat, right in the heart of the Strip. Each suite includes a kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a separate soaking tub and walk-in shower and slick flat-screen TVs. Each suite also has a separate seating area, which makes your stay a lot more comfortable. If you want to do it big, the Panoramic Suites have a marvelous 270-degree view of the city.  Insider tips: Spend an evening at Vice Versa Patio & Lounge, which has a beautiful outdoor patio complete with swings, fire pits and a curved reflecting pool. Your biggest issue will be deciding where to sit. Vice Versa is also open in the afternoon where you can enjoy some refreshing seasonal cocktails. Good to know: Vdara doesn’t have a casino, nightclub, shopping plaza or showroom.  Keep in mind that Vdara is a non-smoking resort. At checkout, you will be fined a cleaning fee. If you want to light up, you'll need to do that next door at Aria's casino or bars.  One of the perks about the hotel not having a casino is you don’t have to worry about the smoke. Plus, this eliminates a lot of the noise, making Vdara a super relaxing hotel. Also, Bellagio and Aria are both a quick walk away, so you can get your casino, show and shopping fix here.

    California

It might be named for the Golden State but it’s all about Hawaiian flair at the California Hotel (or The Cal as we locals like to call it). The hotel has become kind of a mecca for visitors from Hawaii. Staff members don Hawaiian shirts, island hospitality is ever present and you can feast on the flavors of Hawaii at Aloha Specialties.  The Cal is conveniently located about a block from the Fremont Street Experience. It’s also connected to Main Street Station hotel via a walkway so you can take advantage of things like their Triple 7 Brewpub, which we highly recommend you do. You can also easily walk to downtown attractions like The Mob Museum, or take a short ride over to the Las Vegas Premium Outlets - North. Besides Hawaiian food, The Cal offers everything from fast food to fine dining. The Redwood Steakhouse has a table for you in its Old Vegas-style dining room if you’re in the mood for steak. For American classics served 24 hours daily, there's the Market Street Cafe. Be sure to try their legendary oxtail soup.  If it's a drink you're looking for, grab one at the easygoing San Francisco Pub or the elegant Main Street Bar. Or enjoy catching up on the day's games at Dave's Bar, located next to Cal's Sports Book on the second floor.   Test your luck in the 36,000-square-foot casino, where you'll discover more than 1,100 slot and video poker machines and 28 different table games. For a bit of luck, swing past the California's giant Buddha statue, placed just off the lobby near the elevators, and give its belly a rub. Guests who want to venture outside of downtown can take a complimentary shuttle to Sam's Town on Boulder Highway and from Sam's Town to the Strip. For those who just want to stay at The Cal and relax there's a small rooftop pool that guests can lounge around and take in the views of downtown Las Vegas and the surrounding mountains. Oh, and if you are crazy curious about how a hotel named after California became a mecca for all things Hawaiian, it's all due to gaming pioneer Sam Boyd who tailored The Cal to appeal to Hawaiian tourists. You can read about it in the book "California Hotel and Casino: Hawai'i’s Home Away from Home." The hotel will be undergoing construction on the west hotel tower starting Sept. 6. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the front desk.

    MGM Grand

If you could stuff all of Vegas under one roof, MGM Grand is big enough to accommodate that. The vibe: Infinitesimally large, diverse offerings to satisfy every type of visitor, show-rific What we love: You don't have to leave the hotel to experience many of the "bests" of Vegas. MGM Grand is home to some of the world's top restaurants along with a stable of celebrity chefs. (Anyone heard of Wolfgang Puck, Tom Colicchio and Emeril Lagasse?)  Insider tips: The best way to avoid the long taxi line - which can stretch around the porte cochere on a busy night - is to take the Las Vegas Monorail. Good to know: A reality about staying at MGM Grand is that you'll do a lot of walking. You could easily rack up several miles on your Fitbit each day just by going from your room to the pool, restaurants and bars. (For those among us who are more lethargic, this may be the one time you request a room near the elevator bank.) Keep in mind every hotel room is non-smoking. Don't risk it - that's a pricey cleaning fee at checkout. Save yourself the trouble and smoke in designated areas only. What shows and concerts are playing at MGM Grand?: Shows playing at MGM Grand include Kà, Jabbawockeez, David Copperfield, Brad Garrett's Comedy Club and concerts at MGM Grand Garden Arena. What is there to do at MGM Grand?: Enjoy the interactive Virtual Reality, tee up at TopGolf. What makes MGM Grand unique?: MGM Grand is one of the largest hotels on the Las Vegas Strip with more than 4,997 hotel rooms.

    Mandalay Bay

    Mandalay Bay

With high-profile bars, entertainment and eateries as well as shopping and golden sand, the massive Mandalay Bay tips the scales of fun to the south end of the Strip.  The vibe: Boasting a vast beachy layout, this one-stop has-it-all (including massive convention facilities) What we love: This pool area will impress even the snobbiest of beach freaks. Called Mandalay Beach, it spans a whopping 11.5 acres. In addition to three large pools, a lazy river and tons of white sand, there's a 1.6-million-gallon wave pool where the surf's always up.  If you're looking to explore the depths of the ocean check out the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay that features a wide variety of reptiles and aquatic animals as well as hands-on shark and turtle feeds for an extra fee.  Insider tips: Because this resort is all about the water vibes, why not have the most luxurious bath of your life by getting a room with one of their massive tubs and stopping by Lush in The Shoppes at Mandalay Place to stock up on colorful bath bombs, bubbles, and oils to make bath time a work of art.  Good to know: Remember that awesome pool we told you about above, well, it closes during winter (usually from November to February). Being a mid-range, upmarket hotel, you'll pay more for rooms here...but don't expect luxury amenities. The standard deluxe rooms are spacious at about 550 square feet and come with a 42-inch flat-screen TV as well as a 15-inch one in the bathroom. But there's no refrigerator (just a minibar with sensors that charge you if you move anything). Keep in mind if you book a non-smoking room and light up in here, you'll be charged a hefty cleaning fee at checkout. Your best bet is to smoke downstairs in the casino or neighboring bars.   The cardio room at Mandalay Bay is small for such a huge resort but you'll get a lot of exercise just from walking around. Location-wise, Mandalay Bay sits on the southernmost end of the Strip (it's not in the heart of the action). Many visitors like the remote location, but if you need to get to showrooms and restaurants at other hotels, make sure you leave well in advance. If you don't have a car, there are Deuce/RTC bus stops in front of the resort. Use those to get anywhere you want to go. There's also a fully enclosed (and air-conditioned) walkway between Luxor and Excalibur.

    Palms Place

Connected to the Palms Casino Resort, Palms Place is its more refined younger sister -- minus the gaming. It has an all-suite tower that offers fantastic views of the Strip as well as a lounge and pool. The vibe: Luxury-leaning hotel with reasonable rates, contemporary, quiet What we love: Palms Place is a short drive from the Strip, doesn't feel congested and whenever you crave gaming or more choices in food, nightlife and entertainment, nearly everything you could want is just a few moments away. Not a fan of casinos and smoking? Don't want to be among the crowds at resorts on the Strip? Then Palms Place is for you. It's also not bad for folks with kids. The accommodations at Palms Place feel more like urban condos than hotel rooms. You'll have a fully equipped kitchen at your fingertips. In addition to at least two large plasma TVs, there's a spa tub, waterfall shower and small TV in the bathroom. In addition, one-bedroom units are available for upgrade which include a larger kitchen, fireplace, in-unit laundry facilities and a sofa bed.  Insider tips: As mentioned, Palms Place is a short distance from the Strip. If you don't have a car, rideshare services and taxis are prevalent and available 24/7. Palms Place also offers a complimentary shuttle to its sister property Palace Station, which includes a full-service casino and several restaurants. Good to know: Opened in 2008, Palms Place isn't brand spankin' new, but it's in fairly good condition. The rooms feel modern and are filled with great amenities, but since they've never been remodeled you may find spots showing wear and tear as well as fixtures and appliances that could use some updating. The lighting is quite dim in the hallways and actually in the rooms too. But that's just due to décor choices, which include lots of small lamps with funky and interesting shapes. Palms Place doesn't have its own parking garage. If you want to park your car, you can use the west garage at the Palms, but you'll have to walk through the garage and around the exterior of Palms Place to enter it. There are also some parking spots in front of the hotel, but then you'll have to stroll up the driveway -- and maybe dodge a few vehicles -- before you get in.

    Main Street Station

    Main Street Station

For the history buffs and artifact appreciators alike, the Main Street Station Hotel and Casino is a sure bet just steps from the heart of downtown Las Vegas. Set in the splendor of the Victorian era, the ‘70s-built property is home to a 28,000-square-foot casino, more than 400 hotel rooms and a microbrewery on the premises with drink specials that will make you a believer of love at first pint. Upon entry and check-in at the resort, visitors will be captivated by numerous items inside the property. The lobby, which resembles a train depot with long wooden benches, is replete with turn-of-the-century artifacts including vintage coin-operated slot machines – oooo, ahhhh - apothecary cabinets (void of old-timey and most likely poisonous medications) and a pair of pipe organs, all of which add pleasant character to the hotel’s ambiance in a random-antique-combination sort of way. Additionally, in one of the men's restrooms, a portion of the Berlin wall is stoically perched for a little relief room décor. But perhaps the most prominent artifact within the resort is the striking statue of a wild boar in the center of the resort's main bar that once stood in a fountain in Nice, France… nice touch, huh? Interested in challenging yourself to a little game of life-sized “I Spy?” Request a map at the front desk to pinpoint even more treasures located throughout the resort. For example, railroad enthusiasts will delight in examining several fully restored train cars placed along the sidewalk directly outside of the resort. To intrigue your curiosity, guests get to view the various cars including the dining compartment, kitchen and sleepers from the opulent Cascade, which was built for a railroad executive in 1897. Also permanently parked at the Main Street are the Pullman cars of the Blackhawk, which used to transport the famed Buffalo Bill Cody and other stars of the "Wild West Show" across America.   Is the history buff inside of you hungry for more? Everywhere you look, something beautiful is sure to catch your eye. The hotel’s interior alone features high ceilings, sprawling columns, ornate bronze doors and intricately-carved woodwork in addition to artful stained glass windows and chandeliers (including one from the Figaro Opera House in Paris) that will leave you breathless. Now, that your history craving is fed, how about satiating that food craving next? The cuisine at Main Street Station is as popular with locals as it is with visitors, thanks to a buffet and microbrewery that perfectly blends modern flavors with a fun dining experience. The Garden Court Buffet offers a wide array of global cuisine that is prepared freshly for guests and visitors to devour breakfast, lunch, dinner and/or a weekend champagne brunch.   In addition to the buffet is the Triple 7 Restaurant and Microbrewery that is always packed and always ready to pour you a cold one (or three!) straight from the brewery’s tap. Here you will find eight to nine handcrafted beers on tap (several of which have won awards), and you can take a gander at the giant copper vats used to create them. The menu includes fresh baked pizzas and pub favorites ranging from burgers to fish and chips. Plus, there's a special section of the restaurant where sushi and oysters are served. The 28,000-square-foot casino at Main Street Station is a lively area of the hotel brought to life by more than 800 slot and video poker machines, and a wide array of table games. However, if relaxation is what you're going for, go ahead and lounge poolside at the resort's quaint outdoor pool. In addition to being charming, Main Street Station is also very conveniently located. Connected via the Bridge Avenue walkway to the California Hotel & Casino and only a block from the famous Fremont Street Experience, all of the downtown excitement is just steps from the hotel’s main entrance. Similarly, visitors can also enjoy other activities, like shopping at the nearby Las Vegas Premium Outlets - North or catching a Broadway production or musical concert at The Smith Center, a new world-class performing arts venue in the heart of our city. Charmingly delightful with a little history, a little play, and a lot of a fun, Main Street Station is ideal for anyone who is looking to experience the excitement of Las Vegas at an affordable price that doesn’t sacrifice a good time.

    Planet Hollywood

With a veneer of Hollywood glitz, Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino is home to multiple headliners and the Miracle Mile Shops as well as a slew of cool restaurants and rockin' bars. The vibe: Hollywood reborn in Sin City, a dazzling disco-lit world, middle of the road What we love: From the moment you arrive, you'll feel the energy. As you descend the escalator into the lobby, you're greeted by dazzling chandeliers, a sparkling crystal centerpiece, and vibrant LED lights that shift in color behind the front desk. It’s a scene that channels the glamor and excitement of a modern-day disco—think “Saturday Night Fever,” but with a sleek, contemporary twist. For thrill-seekers, the FlowRider Wave-in-a-Box Double at Planet Hollywood is a must-try. As the first of its kind on the Strip, it offers the perfect chance to catch a wave or show off your kickflip skills—right in the heart of Vegas. It’s a totally rad experience that brings the beach to the boulevard. And when it’s time to catch a show, the Zappos Theater delivers. This retrofitted venue has been transformed into one of the city’s premier concert destinations. With a massive LED wall, a powerful sound system, and a lively dance floor, every performance becomes a full-on sensory celebration. Big-name headliners and unforgettable vibes make this a can’t-miss stop on your Vegas adventure. Insider tips: Craving a serious slice of pizza? Head to Pin-Up Pizza, right along the Strip-facing side of the resort. Their pies are massive—each one stretches 30 inches across, which means every slice is a whopping 15 inches long and 6 inches wide. It’s the biggest slice on the Strip, and it’s as delicious as it is impressive. Looking for a gaming experience with a little extra flair? The Pleasure Pit on the casino floor brings the energy with live go-go dancers, upbeat music, and a playful vibe. Whether you're dealt in by glamorous ladies or chiseled gentlemen, you’ll find 11 tables offering games like blackjack, three-card poker, roulette, and Big Six—all in a lively, high-energy setting. And just steps from the front entrance, the Extra Lounge still carries a bit of Hollywood sparkle. Once known as the Vegas hangout for the crew of NBC’s Extra (yes, including Mario Lopez), it remains a stylish spot to grab a drink, people-watch, and soak in the scene. Whether or not the cameras are rolling, it’s a great place to kick off your night. Good to know: Planet Hollywood's rooms still offer solid comfort and value—especially given the unbeatable center-Strip location. Originally opened in 2007 (and before that, the “new” Aladdin in 2000), the resort has seen some wear, but it continues to deliver a fun, energetic Vegas experience. Standard rooms don’t include coffee makers or mini-fridges, but they do feature 42-inch plasma TVs for your entertainment. If you're looking for more in-room amenities like kitchen space, upgrading to a suite is a great option and well worth the splurge. The casino is alive with energy—expect high-volume music and a party atmosphere that never really stops. It’s all part of the resort’s lively vibe, perfect for those who want to stay in the heart of the action. Getting to the lobby from the self-parking garage can be a bit of a trek, involving a few escalators and a stroll through the Miracle Mile Shops. But here’s a pro tip: drop off your travel companions at the front entrance to check in, then take your time parking and maybe even grab a drink along the way. By the time you reconnect, you’ll be ready to toast to your Vegas adventure.

    Wynn Las Vegas

    Wynn Las Vegas

Vegas hotels don't get any better than Wynn Las Vegas with its luxurious accommodations and the finest of fine restaurants and shops. The vibe: Razzle-dazzle architecture and décor, generously proportioned rooms, every possible convenience, totally gourmet. What we love: There's just something about staying at an elite hotel like Wynn that makes you feel swanky. Revered for elegance and for having incomparably high standards of service, it doesn't matter who you are because you'll feel like someone very important here. A breathtakingly beautiful atrium alive with trees, shrubs and flowers is situated near the lobby. We adore the whimsical floral installation, which is sure to make your spirits soar. It goes without saying that Wynn would have a gorgeously landscaped pool deck. But we'll say it anyway because lying in the gardens beside either of the two lovely main pools (or splashing out for a cabana) is like escaping to "Fantasy Island"...minus the plane, the island and Tattoo. Three words: Wynn Dream bed. Yes, this is a thing -- more specifically, it's a custom-designed Sealy mattress dreamily made up with 507-thread-count linens and overstuffed pillows and shams. A perfect night's sleep is guaranteed.  Insider tips: Welcome vegans and vegetarians. All of the restaurants in Wynn (and Encore) have special menu items designed for you. So if you're out with a group, no worries. Wherever you choose to dine, there'll be something perfect for everyone to eat. Visit the Lake of Dreams, located behind the Strip's only manmade mountain. You can't see it from outside Wynn, but when you come inside look for the circular escalator and ride it to the bottom. From dusk until 12:30 a.m., fanciful shows filled with music and holographics play at half-hour intervals on the lake's 40-foot waterfall. The best viewing point is on the terrace of the bar called Aft. Nurse a drink or two and you'll have an evening of entertainment. Good to know: Wynn Resort rooms are big and well designed. The one thing they don't come with is a fridge. Now you will find a minibar in these rooms, but be warned: If you move anything from its place to make space for your own drinks and snacks, you'll automatically be billed for it. It seems silly to talk about upgrades at Wynn, but the possibilities are endless when every room and suite at this hotel feels like a little piece of heaven. That said, the Tower Suites have been awarded the prestigious Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Award for nineteen straight years. Counted among the finest boutique hotels in the world, they have their own exclusive entrance, lobby and pool. Wynn is connected to its even more elegant sister property. So if you find you want to dial down the crowds and energy level a notch, Encore's quieter, boutique-style offerings are just steps away. Wynn has an awesome self-parking garage, but be aware that on extremely busy weekends as well as during major events or big premieres, you may want to go next door and use the self-parking garage at Encore. Also as an FYI, no outside food or beverages are allowed in the resort or the casino, even if you're staying in a room. All guests who arrive with these items will be told to throw it away or leave it in their car.
