The Fondation Bettencourt Schueller is celebrating thirty years of commitment to choral singing. To mark the occasion it has decided to bring together nineteen excerpts from recordings made by ensembles it has supported since 1989 thanks to the Liliane Bettencourt Prize for Choral Singing. The Foundation has entrusted the artistic direction of this album to Laurence Equilbey music director of the accentus chamber choir and Insula Orchestra and winner of the Liliane Bettencourt Prize for Choral Singing in 1995. The anthology reflects the diversity of the repertories performed by the winners of the Liliane Bettencourt Prize. In addition to accentus the list includes William Christie s Les Arts Florissants Hervé Niquet s Le Concert Spirituel Raphaël Pichon s Ensemble Pygmalion Leonardo García Alarcón s Namur Chamber Choir Geoffroy Jourdain s Les Cris de Paris Mathieu Romano s Ensemble Aedes Roland Hayrabedian s Musicatreize and the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris conducted by Lionel Sow.

The album Melancholia presents songs and piano mazurkas by Polish composers Chopin Paderweski and Szymanowski. There are only 19 songs officially verified as Chopin s works all of them inspired by lyrics of his contemporaries poets. Most of Chopin s vocal compositions were published after his death and combined as Op.74. The poetry of Adam Mickiewicz inspired Ignacy Jan Paderewski to work on a cycle regarding love longing and passing of the time. Six songs were created between 1887-1893. Paderewski died in New York after having a remarkable European and American career as an outstanding pianist composer philanthropist and politician. The Twelve Kurpian Songs by Karol Szymanowski demonstrates the composers fascination in simplicity vitality and energy going side by side with an expression of the Kurpian dialect. In the cycle Word Songs to words by Julian Tuwim the listener can hear a fantasy world hidden between music lines and lyrics by Julian Tuwim. Word Songs were composed in the summer of 1921 Karol dedicated them to his sister - Stanislawa Korwin-Szymanowska who was also the first interpreter of these vocal works.

The theatre music of Poland is a peculiar phenomenon; almost every Polish composer has created a score for the needs of this spectacle and many have entirely devoted themselves to this field. This music is awarded and honored. Nevertheless it practically does not exist in a concert or recording community. Stanislaw RADWAN is one of the best known and respected composers of theatre and film music. He composed several hundred pieces on commission of the most eminent Polish directors and all leading theatres in Poland. He linked a great part of his artistic path to Cracow: starting from studies at the local State Higher School of Music in the class of Krzysztof Penderecki through activities in the famous Kraków theatres ending at the cooperation with the Piwnica pod Baranami cabaret. It is natural that a series of recordings of The Musical Trace of Cracow documenting the theatre and film music of eminent artists from this full of theatres writers actors directors and composers city opens an album dedicated to the work of Radwan.

Latvian composer Peteris Vasks(b. 1946) has earned much international acclaim through his deeply spiritual works of choral music symphonies and concertos. Vasks list of works also includes several pieces of chamber music. This album by Trio Palladio from Latvia includes Vasks works for the piano trio. Trio Palladio is a chamber music ensemble of three established Latvian soloists avid chamber musicians and acclaimed recording artists Eva Bindere Kristina Blaumane and Reinis Zarinš. Each of them is the laureate of the Grand Music Award of Latvia and in 2019 they were nominated for this prestigious award as a trio. Recently the trio had it s debut recital at the London Wigmore Hall and the trio s interpretations have been broadcast live on the BBC Radio 3 as well as the Polish and Latvian radio. Trio Palladio creates conceptual programmes with rich variety of classical romantic and contemporary chamber music with particular focus on works by Latvian and Baltic composers.

Our Leo Fall cycle continues with Die Rose von Stambul (The Rose of Stamboul). This operetta in three acts offers music that is full of feeling. This highly emotional work celebrated it s premiere with great success at the Theater an der Wien in 1916. Die Rose von Stambul s 422 straight performances made it the most successful operetta in the history of the Theater an der Wien next to Franz Lehár s The Merry Widow. Within the shortest time performances followed throughout Central Europe. However like Emmerich Kálmán s The Csárdás Princess it did not become an international success - primarily because of World War I since the theaters of the Allied counties had stopped staging German-language works. Achmed Bey the son of a Turkish minister is married to Kondja The Rose of Stamboul. However she has exchanged letters with a passionate novelist and fallen in love with him. What she does not suspect: none other than her husband is behind this pseudonym -which provides plenty of opportunities for the expression of emotions - rendered in the Viennese waltz mode ( Ein Walzer muss es sein ) or tunes of Oriental flair.

The young Czech soprano Hana Blažíkóva is one of the most exciting voices in the baroque scene today. Conductors such as Herreweghe Suzuki and Luks frequently invite her to record and perform and she regularly appears at renowned festivals. For her debut as a solo artist she selected German cantatas and sacred concertos from the latter half of the 17th c. works characterized by alternations between freely rhapsodic monodies and sections of great contrapuntal polyphonic density typical of their time exhibiting virtuoso coloratura declamation and heartfelt courtly love for Jesus.
