Formerly issued on the Muse label and reissued on its successor 32 Jazz song stylist Freddy Cole finds himself in good company with producer Houston Person on tenor sax; Cecil Bridgewater; Steve Turre; and a fine rhythm section of Kenny Washington Jerry Byrd and Tom Hubbard. Cole provides his own piano accompaniment. Recorded in 1993 the play list is comprised of familiar standards and less well-known material including two by Cole. Not all the cuts have Cole singing. The opening track Easy to Love is an instrumental with everybody getting a chance to solo. There are few bars during the bridge where Cole s piano and the guitar of Jerry Byrd get a sound similar to that which Nat King Cole created with his guitar player Oscar Moore. Much is written trying to find variations between this Cole and brother Nat. But on such tunes as This Is the Life the similarities in tone timbre and mannerisms rather than differences are underscored. On this cut Bridgewater s trumpet weaves in and out with Cole s vocalizing both on top of Washington s drums. In contrast Freddy Cole s voice takes on a deeper hue than his brother s on Sweet Beginnings with Bridgewater s trumpet once more the instrumental counterpart. The melodious trombone of Steve Turre is important to making Don t Change Your Mind About Me one of the album s more engaging tracks. Although it s virtually impossible to avoid comparisons with his more famous big brother Freddy Cole s work stands on its merits as his successful career both as recording and performing artist has settled. Thinking about Amsterdam the first thing that comes to your mind are the town canals coffee shops and small Cafés. The city on the banks of the Amstel River is also one the most important Jazz metropolis in Europe and is known for it s numerous clubs and bars in which live music is played daily. Jazz plays an important role in this. Jazz also plays an important role in the life of Tossia Corman. The Singer moved from Düsseldorf to Amsterdam where she met the musicians with whom she has been making music for just about a year now. The fact that the band decided to join a record studio and to record the Debut album quot;Up The Hillsquot; clearly proves the good chemistry and vibes between the individual musicians. Ten songs which will gain a lot of attention in the European Jazz- scene. Tossia Corman blends and mixes the tone aesthetics of jazz with the text- intensity of the classical Singer-/ Songwriter-movement. Clear structures that also leave space for improvisation. The two wind instruments (saxophone and trumpet) proved to be equal counterparts at any time to the stirring vocals of the young Düsseldorfer. Hereby this process unites the individual arrangements of beautiful songs skillfully joining Pop and sophistication for them to directly arrive there where they belong: In the ear. Under the skin. The ten songs show the wide range of influences by the musicians. Influences such as Hip Hop Folk- and Rock- elements gleam through. It is an unusual mixture which is reinforced by interpretations of songs by such diverse artists as the Jazz- pianist Chick Corea or also the American Band Incubus. The individual songs lyrically act on situations of the everyday life. Love self- doubt or also the hope to grow with your own tasks. The problems of finding yourself and your role in this ever so fast increasing society are reflected in the lyrics of quot;Up The Hillsquot; quot;By myself I m trying to reach all the things you want from mequot; Tossia Corman sings in the title song of the album and it is to be understood that one should possibly distance themselves from such things and therefore be able to focus again on the essence. It is admirable how the honesty of the love-relationship is handled in quot;The Real Thingquot;. quot;She doesn t know a lot about moving so she stands stillquot;. On the search for the big true love we simply forget that we must move and take action in order to recognize that perhaps one has already found it. Thus quot;Up The Hillsquot; is especially focusing on hope. It is essential because if you absolutely want to create or manage something there is only one way: take the initiative of your own life and just try it out! The Spiros Exaras World-Jazz Ensemble is a six piece band which blends jazz with the exotic rhythms melodies and instruments of Greece. The Greek-jazz band consists of some of the world s renowned musicians such as pianist Hery Hey bassist Matt Garrison drummer Gene Lake percussionist vocalist Arto Tuncboyaciyan and clarinetist Lefteris Bournias. Under the direction of guitarist Spiros Exaras the band has created Phrygianics a rich mixture of syncopated rhythms jazz melodies and unique arrangements all come together to make the hypnotic groove of this CD. Phrygianics had been initially released world wide with the legendary Blue Note Records (2003) and got the attention of a lot of radio producers and festivals. This album succeds in achieving that special blend from modern to traditional playful to somber and Eastern to Western that so many musicians in the past have failed at as Joshua Kline wrote in his Jazz Review magazine review. Now it has been released with Polyglottal Music. Spiros Exaras has studied clasical guitar and composition at the Athens Conservatory of Athens. He has been playing professionally since his 16th year of age. While in Greece Spiros was the lead guitarist of the National Greek Radio and Television Orchestra (ERT) and had perfomed several times with the Orchestra of Colors . At the same time he was the guitar choice of acclaimed composers such as Elias Andriopoulos Evanthia Reboutsika and Kostas Hatzis. He released his first CD in collaboration with Kostas Hatzis entitled Kostas Hatzis for clasical guitar (MBI 1992). Since he relocated to the US in 1992 Spiros soon became the new kid in town performing in the hottest clubs of New York City and brought a new sound with a compination of clasical jazz and Greek music. He has worked with some of the world s most pre-eminent musicians such as Shirley Bassey Randy Brecker Harvey S Joel Rosenblatt Mike Pope Jon Benitez Richie Morales and Philip Hamilton to name just a few. He recently shared the stage with the Grammy Award Winner Mr Dave Valentin. He crossed over into pop music by playing the guitar solo on Mariah Carey s smash hit My All (Sony Music 1998). Spiros has also composed music for the feature film Everything for a Reason (2000) the short film Niko s Restaurant (2001) and the theatrical play Gallathea (2002) and The Chicken and The Hen (2007).
