The Whitetop Mountain Band draws its name from the second highest independent mountain peak in the Virginia Appalachian mountain range. The band's nucleus consists of the Spencer family (husband Thornton on fiddle, wife Emily on banjo and vocals, and daughter Martha on guitar, banjo and vocals). On this recording, they are joined by Spencer Pennington on guitar and vocals with Michelle Lyle on string bass. The band's musical inspiration comes from the tri-state region of southwestern Virginia, western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee; an area rich in Appalachian string band music. This is their only recording for Arhoolie.

The Moiseyev Dance Ensemble is considered by some to be Russia's greatest theatrical folk dance company. Formed in 1937 by Igor Aleksandrovich Moiseyev, the ensemble served as a cultural ambassador for the Soviet Union; in 1958, it performed to acclaim in the United States. This album, "recorded under the personal supervision of Igor Moiseyev," comprises 12 tracks of musical interpretations of folk dance music by Orchestra of the Moiseyev Dance Ensemble. The liner notes are a reprint of an article by John Martin, dance critic for the York Times.

Not all eight members of the California Cajun Orchestra can trace their ancestry to Cajun roots. Their musical roots, however, are firmly planted in the Cajun genre, and they honed their music by playing hundreds of dances throughout California over an eight-year period. Their debut recording, Not Lonesome Anymore is a collection of 17 songs featuring the waltz and two-step rhythms of and traditional Cajun music. Mercy Dee (born Mercy Davis Walton, August 3, 1915 - December 2, 1962) was a jump blues pianist who found fame after spending years working the fields in Texas.
