Not all eight members of the California Cajun Orchestra can trace their ancestry to Cajun roots. Their musical roots, however, are firmly planted in the Cajun genre, and they honed their music by playing hundreds of dances throughout California over an eight-year period. Their debut recording, Not Lonesome Anymore is a collection of 17 songs featuring the waltz and two-step rhythms of and traditional Cajun music. The Whitetop Mountain Band draws its name from the second highest independent mountain peak in the Virginia Appalachian mountain range. The band's nucleus consists of the Spencer family (husband Thornton on fiddle, wife Emily on banjo and vocals, and daughter Martha on guitar, banjo and vocals). On this recording, they are joined by Spencer Pennington on guitar and vocals with Michelle Lyle on string bass. In Irish, ceol anam translates literally to music'soul a title chosen by Carol Barney and John Sherman to reflect the deep musical kinship felt between the two musicians when they first encountered one another at an Irish music gathering in Elkins, West Virginia. As such, the album's 17 tracks feel like something of a musical heart-to-heart between the two deeply talented guitar players: always intimate, often wistful, and strongly sentimental. The pieces, almost all arranged by Sherman, represent mostly traditional Celtic melodies merged with a Age sensibility reminiscent of the Windham Hill guitarist William Ackerman. Mostly instrumental, Ceol Anam also features Irish- and English-language vocal performances from Bridget Fitzgerald and Sue Morgan-Mattison, as well as fiddle performances from former Fairport Convention touring member Rodger Burridge. Released originally by Folk-Legacy Records in 1999, Ceol Anam offers unique and exceptionally beautiful interpretations of Celtic music.

Dimitras Kukas, familiarly known as Barba Mitsos ("Uncle Mitsos"), sang and composed these unaccompanied songs. Born at the end of the 19th century on the island of Syros, Kukas grew up in Mykonos, and until his death in 1980 was one of the last performers of this Greek oral tradition.While Kukas' songs are original compositions, he comments,"I keep the tradition of my father and grandfather, who sang this sort of song when I was a child." Kukas draws upon the traditional distich, or two-line couplet, which is the keystone of Greek oral tradition. The distiches provide a body of pre-constructed formulas images, comparisons, and adages which Kukas uses and reworks in his own songs. The songs include essential themes of popular Greek repertoire such as love and sorrow, odes to mother, xenitia (songs for those far from home), and miroloia (funeral songs).
